-
Presented here is a superb and rare Bulova watch with a dial featuring the 1966 American University Basketball Tournament.
-
The National Invitation Tournament was created by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association in 1938. Responsibility for its administration was transferred two years later to local colleges, first known as the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Committee and, in 1948, as the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association (MIBA), which included representatives from five New York schools:Fordhma University, Manhattan College, New-York University,St. John's University and Wagner College.
-
Originally, all the teams that qualified for the tournament were invited to New York, and all the matches were played at Madison Square Garden, a historic sports venue.
-
The watch is driven by a mechanical hand-wound Calibre 11AL mechanism. The back is engraved M5, indicating the year of manufacture, 1965.
The dial features "NIT MIBA" around a basketball. The steel caseback is engraved with the year the watch was presented to St. John's University basketball players, after the team won the NIT championship in 1966.
A really interesting piece from a historical point of view.
