CERTINA

ALBRECHT ZURICH

CIRCA 1940

-

In 1888, the brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth set up their own watch production facility in the Swiss town of Grenchen. In this idyllic setting, at the foot of the Jura Mountains between Solothurn and Biel, the two brothers and their three employees worked in an annex to the family home. Their business quickly proved to be successful. In the following years, they undertook several expansions and hired new staff.

-

In 1906, the Kurth brothers launched a brand for their own watches: "Grana", the abbreviation of "Granacus", which is the Latin name of Grenchen. The quality of this timepiece was immediately acclaimed and earned it several awards. In the 1920s, Erwin and Hans, the sons of Alfred Kurth, joined the company and brought it through the world economic crisis.

During the 1930s, the company increasingly used the name Certina, and for good reason: it is easy to pronounce in any language and comes from the Latin word "certus", which means "trustworthy". The brand name was officially registered in 1939, and in 1949 it became the sole brand name.

The model presented here follows this chronology. An absolutely elegant watch with an exemplary execution.

This Certina has the rare distinction of having a double signature on its dial. Indeed, it is an example that was sold by the jeweler Albrecht in Zurich in the 40s.

There is almost no information about him, only a few photos of advertisements in the press of the time, which leaves the taste of a particular rarity and confidentiality of this collaboration.

The style and quality of this watch are at the level of the most prestigious brands of the time. It is extremely simple and at the same time very sophisticated. It is a model with soldered handles as it was often done in its time.

This watch is in very good condition for its age. The case is gold plated and the back is stainless steel.

The watch is driven by a Swiss made 16-jewel Certina KF 324 movement.

A very beautiful watch, elegant with a subtle and confidential signature. Rare.
